How to make your movie black and white ? COMMERCIAL SOLUTION

Now let's suppose that while editing your home video you have discovered a few moments that you would like to become black and white only. Let's consider that you have already imported this video to AVS Video Editor. For example, you have found out 5 seconds of video and you want it to be black and white.

Install AVS Video Editor.

Step 1: Add Adjust Grayscale video effect.
Step 2: Set the boundaries and fade-in and fade-out limits on the Timeline.
Step 3: Choose the effect parameters.
Step 4: Preview the result using the Main Preview window.

STEP 1:   Adding adjust grayscale video effect

  1. To start adding any video effect you should click the Video Effects button in the Create Movie menu pane.

  2. Find the Adjust Grayscale video effect icon in the Media Library and click to highlight it. It is located in the Adjust video effects group.

  3. To add the selected video effect to the Timeline please use drag-and-drop method: drag the desired track icon from the Media Library to the Timeline. You can also click the Add To Timeline button.

After that you should set boundaries and Fade-in and Fade-out limits.

STEP 2:   Setting the boundaries and fade-in and fade-out limits on the timeline

First we should set the video effect boundaries. The boundaries should be set according to the starting and ending position of the area you want to be represented in black and white:

Fade-in is the area where the effect starts being reflected on your video. In the area of maximum representation the effect is applied to 100% capacity. In the Fade-out area the effect is being reduced until it completely disappears.

After you choose the effect you want to apply, the program automatically sets fade-in and fade-out boundaries. You should change them by clicking the left mouse button and dragging the boundaries inwards or outwards according to your wish. Supposedly, you want your video to go smoothly into black and white. When the black and white part of the video is over, you want the rest of your video clip to be colored without smooth transition. The fade-in and fade-out limits should be set as shown:

After all, you should choose effect parameters.

STEP 3:   Choosing the effect parameters

  1. Put the Timeline cursor at the position of the effect selection as shown:

  2. Click the Show/Hide Preview button to open the Main Preview window.

At the Effect Parameters tab located right under the Main Preview you should set the parameters of this video effect. You should select here between Desaturate and Intensity type of Grayscale video effect. You can visually judge how these two types differ with the help of the Main Preview.

The only thing left - is to preview the result.

STEP 4:   Previewing the result

The Main Preview is intended for previewing the whole project with audio and all of the effects and changes you made. This is exactly what we need!

  1. Move the Timeline cursor to the position where you want to start previewing.

  2. Click the Play Preview button.

  3. Enjoy!!!
